Numerous specialists in intercultural communication theory and practice, diplomats and representatives from international and non-governmental organisations have been invited to contribute to this innovative publication. First, the reader will go back to the basics of intercultural communication theory before moving to a second topic, intercultural communication in the practice of diplomacy. The next part of the publication will deal with the communication between organisational and professional cultures; Diplo’s primary field of interest for upcoming research. The practice of diplomacy increasingly involves handling not only differences in national cultures, but different organisational and professional cultures at the same time. Diplomats increasingly function in a multilateral environment, interacting with many international organisations, from the UN to specific interest lobby groups. The final topic of the publication is the specific intercultural training for diplomats. Throughout the publication, readers will be led through case studies illustrating the need for intercultural competence in diplomacy, suggesting the importance for comprehensive training programmes and indications for further study.

- ItemThe 21st Century Ambassador(DiploFoundation, 2004) Rana, Kishan S.The 21st Century Ambassador examines the institution of the ambassador in the context of changing international relations. Combining theoretical rigor with practical experience, Kishan Rana raises some pertinent questions: Is the ambassador a political representative of his/her country in a foreign location? What has happened to the traditional roles the ambassador was expected to fulfill? How have Indian envoys served their country and in which direction have their performance evolved? Highlighting the changes in international diplomacy, Rana delineates how roles and responsibilities of ambassadors are being redefined. The book argues that there is a greater functional necessity for the resident ambassador than at any previous time in the volatility of contemporary international relations.

- ItemLe bicorne et la plume(DiploFoundation; Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, 2008) Rial, JacquesDiplomats normally write a lot. It is part of their trade. But do they publish? They certainly do since there are at least six Nobel Literature prize winners among them (St John Perse, Pablo Neruda, George Séféris, Ivo Andrić, Czesław Miłosz, Octavio Paz) and maybe more. In Switzerland however (as in a few other countries) strict administrative regulations often limit this activity. Nevertheless, Jacques Rial, a retired Swiss diplomat, has looked into the catalogues of the main Swiss libraries and has made some surprising discoveries.
