This month, several Amazon shareholders wrote to the company’s CEO expressing concerns over the selling of facial recognition software to US law enforcement agencies. The potential use of Rekognition could ‘violate civil and human rights’ and ‘unfairly and disproportionately target and surveil people of color, immigrants, and civil society organizations’.
